Certain health conditions and family history can tell you a lot about your risk for fatty liver disease and MASH (metabolic dysfunction–associated steatohepatitis). This can indicate if it’s time to talk to your doctor about whether you should be screened.
Don't wait to get evaluated. If you think you are at risk for MASH, SPEAK UP, SPEAK LOUD, and SPEAK NOW.
MASH is an advanced form of fatty liver disease, which is characterized by excessive fat buildup in the liver. Certain health conditions are associated with MASH.
Fatty liver or family history of cirrhosis
Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes
Obesity
High blood pressure
High triglycerides
(a type of fat)
Low HDL (good cholesterol)
PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome)*
Persistently elevated liver enzymes (over 6 months)
If you are living with any of these health conditions, ask your health care professional whether you should be screened for MASH and liver scarring. A great first step is asking to have your FIB-4 score calculated, which you can learn more about here.
*PMOS was formerly known as PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).
FIB-4, Fibrosis-4; HDL, high-density lipoprotein.
